Artist Residency

location LATERA

Ground floor Casa Etruria_edited.jpg

La Casa Etruaria Artist Residency has 2 locations, one in the village of Latera (province of Viterbo) and one in the countryside north of Sorano (Tuscany).

In the middle of the ancient centre of Latera, a few steps away from the main square of the village, you will find the artist residency, location Latera. Once the local pasta -and grocery store, in later years it was transformed into a cosy apartment on 2 levels. The ground floor is an open floor (40m2) with the kitchen, a sitting area and space to work. This floor has a high ceiling. The work space is suitable for artists who work 2-dimensionally and whose works have a small to medium size. In edition there is a large garden nearby, that belongs to the local museum 'Museo della Terra', and that can be used for bigger and/or 3-D objects (see below for photo's).

On the second floor -also an open space of 40m2- is the bedroom with 1 double bed , 1 single bed and the bathroom.  The house offers space to 1 person, a couple, or 2 persons/friends who are willing to share the house. On walking distance is the large museum garden/meadow, where it is also possible to work. The lake, with its multiple opportunities to relax and/or work is very near, and in the village are many spots to work outside.

For a coffee and a 'get-together' with the locals you may visit the small local bar, just a few steps away from the house. Or one of the two bars up the road upon entering the village.

The Etruscan history of the region and the setting in the medieval, authentic village, surrounded by nature and by a multitude of interesting sites, villages and towns, both in the Tuscia Viterbese area and in (Southern) Tuscany and Umbria, makes this area in our eyes a unique, inspiring and conducive place for creatives to spend time, explore interesting sites and simply to create.

LA CASA ETRURIA ARTIST RESIDENCY is an international art program designed to bring talented artists, creative practitioners, researchers and writers from around the world to experience a unique cultural environment that is off the beaten path. By bringing creators of art in a unique setting the Program aims to situate art at the very heart of La Tuscia Viterbese, whilst at the same time revive the village through the ideas and works of artists.

The residency program offers simple but comfortable accommodation for painters, writers, photographers, illustrators, researchers and designers who do not require a separate spacious studio. Also musicians are very welcome. In the apartment a table to work at and a sturdy easel are available. A lighter easel is available for outdoor trips. There are no required activities for participants. We trust that residents will use their time in the way that best fuels their creative practice, whether that be to reflect and dream, work and produce, or experiment and play. There is the possibility, at the end of a 3 or 4 weeks residency, to have an exhibition in the Museo della Terra or in one of the churches in Latera.

Residency applications for location Latera are invited year round for periods of 2 to 8 weeks. Open calls will be posted on the Res Artis platform.

Accessibility
It is possible to reach Latera by public transport. However, public transport is very limited and to really and fully enjoy the surroundings and to take full advantage of the environment and the residency, having your own transport is highly recommended. However, if you decide to come by public transport, the best option to reach Latera would be to take the train from Roma Termini to Montalto di Castro (about 1.30 hours the fastest train, check on https://www.trenitalia.com), and then from Montalto di Castro station to take the mini bus to the centre and from there the bus to Latera, which goes twice daily and takes 43 minutes to arrive (check for times on servizi.cotralspa.it)

In Latera, as in all of the nearby villages, not much English is spoken. Learning a few words in Italian can therefore be very useful.

EXHIBITION
